6th - 9th February 2022 Cockle Creek
Today we are voing to go down the Huon area and stay at Cockle Creek, we were inside having a cuppa with Tanya and Colin before we left when Tanya noticed 2 deer on the lawn feeding, a stag and a spike, we watched for awhile then Tanya managed to sneak out and get a photo before they spooked and ran, apparently they have been coming back each day, on one occasion there was a doe with them and the spent 45minutes feeding and resting
We made our way to Hobart stopping at Sorell for groceries and water, this trip is the first time across the Tasman bridge with the truck, me giving directions, Merv being a bit jumpy about my directions lol. Once we got onto the Southern Outlet belief came into driver about the navigator.
The country side is so beautiful I had forgotten how lovely it was, when we arrived at Huonville we stopped near the river for lunch, great picnic area with lawns, tables, bbqs and public toilets, right beside a very picturesque river.
The trip from there down was windier road, last part gravel, but not bad.
We drove into Recherche Bay, Cockle Creek is at the far end, and was once again taken by the natural beauty. There are camp grounds all the way along the bay but we were headed to the far end over thre bridge to the national park camp grounds.
It was pretty full when we arrived but we found a spot to sqeeze into for the night, it was a bit unlevel but better than nothing, in the morning when someone left we moved to a different spot.
There was blue wrens and rufus wallaby around us most of the time, when I walked to the toilet the first morning there was a tiger snake resting in the sun, apparently it had been living there, there was quite a few tiger snakes seen along the edge of the tracks near the beach.
The camp sites aren't marked out or level but the toilets are very clean.
We walked on the beach enjoying the clean clear water, but it was pretty crisp. After dinner like a lot of others we took our chairs a drink down to the waters edge to enjoy the last of the day.
We tried to walk to Fishers point, got some of the way but there was just too much rock climbing, on the lookout on the way there is an excellent sculpture of a baby right whale, they used to come into the bay before whalers nearly wiped them out.
We went on our biggest walk the following day, it was to South Cape the Southern most part of Australian mainland, thè walk took us 5 hours return, wasn't an easy walk as most of the trail had overgrown or had fallen trees across it but it was well worth it.
We stoped for a picnic lunch at a beautiful creek, when we got back we were both muscle sore so went for a refreshing swim in the very cold water, just beautiful didn't get out fast just stayed and enjoyed
