28th - 29th November 2021 Shelly Beach Ceduna

We packed up and left today it is still cloudy and cold, wind is annoying. We were expecting to go through a check point at the border so made sure we had all the paperwork ready, it is like in hitler days " have you got your pappers", it didn't happen so we continued along the highway noticing the large amount of trucks and very few cars, the excessive trucks are due to the strike action at the Freemantle wharf. There was 4 cars that had broken down, been stripped by passersby and some burnt. I have always hoped to see a hairy nosed wombat as I cross into SA but unfortunately the only one I saw had not made it across the road. We hadn't been driving long and the beautiful sunshine came out, a promise of things to come. We drove for 21/2 houurs, stopped at a pull in area had lunch and was off again. We pulled into Penong for fuel so I rang the caravan park to book in they said their office closed at 7o'clock  it wasn't until then we realized the time change an...

Oh no bloody cloudy windy and cold again looks like rain on the way I think I will stay in bed a bit longer. Around lunch time the sun came out we went for a huge walk, sun went in a couple of hours. An emu came and visited to eat some of the plant nearby.

26th November 2021 Eucla Beach Camp

Yeah sunshine, might be patchy but at least there is sunshine the wind is still cold but we will put up with that for a ray of sunshine. We had breakfast, while I tidied up Merv took the camper off the truck. We then  went for a 11/2 hour walk along the beach. This beach is like a lot of the beaches down south there's weed, rubbish from ships and commercial fishermen but not much else. We came across a huge yellow thing that looked as though iy may have been a mooring bouy. It was lunch time and rest time when we got back. After lunch Merv made a delicious loaf of bread and prepared some dates soaking in water and port to make a loaf. In the afternoon we went for another huge walk the other way, my problem is when I am walking I want to see what is round the next corner. I could see the cliffs on the bite. Just chicken and salad for dinner the night is prety cold but thhe sunset is beawith a promise of things to come.

25th November 2021 Eucla Beach Camp

Image
We left our camp site with 58 kms of 4wd to go, it got better as we went along it appeared as some of the locals go down that track to go out to the beach fishing, they had taken a chainsaw and cut back a lot of the branches, I did see someones roof rack laying on the track. We only saw one large kangaroo but a number of different birds. We travelled for some time then we came to the vermin proof fence, looks like it maybe for foxes, the track was better as it didn't have any trees but it upset me to see so many emu skeletons along the fence they for some reason had wanted to go through but died near the fence. We were on the road 4 days and the only people we saw was the caretakers at the observatory. We arrived out on the Eyre Highway 21/2 hours later near the Madura roadhouse, the tyres were inflated then we set off for our camp at Eucla Beach. The weather remained wintery with wind and rain when we pulled up at Mandrabilla roundhouse we couldn't believe the amount of water ...

Eyre Bird Observatory

24th November 2021 Eyre Bird Observatory

The day was still overcast and very windy but we still set off for the observatory . The first 20kms was a reasonable gravel road which takes you to the top of the escarpment where there is a lookout and a sign telling people that it is only 4wd from there on and the descent down the escarpment was hazardous so choose low range low gear, it didn't sound fun for me so I decided to walk down while Merv drove. It wasn't so bad after all there wasn't any steep sudden drpos off the side which would have freaked me out. The track from there was another 9kms of definite 4wd sand track, the truck went relly well the hardest part was looking out for low hanging branches that may hit the salor panel, there has been a fire through at sometime making the trees hang, they are very close to the track as well. When we reached the sanctuary we were met by the caretakers who are volunteers and stay for 3 months at a time. We were shown through the house which was the original te...

22nd - 23rd November Campsite Eyre Bird Observatory Road

Image
It rained heavy during the night so we decided it wouldn't be smart to go down the Old Telegraph Road crossing the salt lakes. We left the free camp area and went to a park behind the local swimming pool, there is a tap we could get water from, showers that were token operated which was purchased from the information centre, there was also a dump point nearby. We had our breakfast on a table in the park, Merv filled with water then we walked down to the local IGA for some bread and milk, no bread, I would have liked an ice cream from the ice creamery next door but they hadn't opened. We walked back to the truck and had our showers, beautiful. Merv topped up with fuel and we hit the road. There was huge amounts of water laying down the sides of the road, it would not be smart to drive much off the road. We saw 1 big wedge tailed eagle and a small family of emus, we have seen a lot of adolescence emus with dad over the last couple of weeks. We weren't sure where w...

19th - 21st November 2021 Old Telegraph Road

Packed up and left the campsite today heading towards Norsman, on the way to Esperance we stopped in at Warton Beach, another stunning area with islands all around, the archipelago in Esperance must be big as the islands are everywhere. We stopped in one of the car parks near Table Island, walked down to the beach and enjoyed watching 2 little boys approximately 4 and 6 fishing, they were having a ball with their rods and looked like old hands at it. There is a good boat launching area close to the caravan park, Merv said he would like to take the big boat down there in nice summer weather and go out around some of the islands. We then went to Esperance to get a few more groceries  and top up with fuel. There  is a campsite along the Old Telegraph Road we intended to stay hopefully for a couple of nights, if the damn rain stops we might get a bit of metal detecting in. The camp is on the side of Dundas Lake, a salt lake, there is a causeway built across it but it looks pretty ...

15th - 18th November 2021 Alexandra Bay

Today was a busy day packing up in Esperance, grocery shopping, fuel, national parks pass, printed out  at their office, we are not sure if we will be in  Cape Le Grande national park so we had better display it. After leaving Esperance we headed for Dunns Rocks, 4wd in, it was pretty bad there wasn't potholes they were boiler holes that you drive in one side and out the other, the road was in atrocious condition after all the rain. When we reached the so called camp area it really was a joke, toilet was good and that is where it stopped, there wasn't anywhere that you could camp, so wee left for Alexandera Bay. This extra hundred or more kms, apart from the very slow drive out from Dunns Rocks, made it a very long tiring day. When we reached our new destination, after another 4wd track, nowhere near as bad as the other one, we were greeted by another beautiful beach surrounded by islands keeping the beach very sheltered, the sand pure white. The camp areas are lai...

Esperance

13th - 15th November 2021 Esperance

Today was supposed to be  cloudy and windy but the sun is coming out so after we went to the office to get our covid certificates printed out we decided to do the tourist thing and check out the beaches of Esperance. I wondered if you could ever get sick of looking at beaches but the beauty and the turquoise water with white sand, I don't think I could ever get sick of looking at them, they are all different, some with swimming holes some behind rocky outcrops and some open to the waves. The wind picked up nasty during the afternoon which made it very cold but there was young local people still on the beach sunbathing and swimming.
